The Opportunity:

  • This opportunity is targeted at building you into our permanent in-house counsel in only a few months. The initial role is a contractor for a minimum assessment period of 3 months.
  • The Junior Advocate is continuously assessed for competency and cultural fit to ultimately take on the role of a permanent in-house counsel. We are seeking someone who is excited to take on new and interesting challenges and seeking rapid career growth.

Your first 1 month

  • Learn Umati Capital’s products and messaging
  • Learn the tools necessary to be successful: CRM, Google office suite and other Umati technology tools
  • Legal and regulatory compliance advisory and preparation of legal opinions, on a need basis
  • Review and/or create standard template client agreements for all deals including but not limited to indemnity agreements and security documentation
  • Define framework and plan for initial and ongoing legal audits
  • Sealing, witnessing and attesting documents on behalf of the Client Enforcement of the Human Resource Policy and Procedures Manual
  • Co-ordination with pre-qualified Valuers for purposes of valuation (where necessary) to ascertain the merchantability and value of real or movable property to be offered as security
  • Issuance of demand letters and initial follow up for debt recovery
  • Work with mentors to set goals for yourself to gain consideration to promotion

Your Next 2 to 3 months

  • Continue execution of responsibilities from Month 1
  • Conduct initial legal compliance audit
  • Issuance of demand letters and initial follow up for debt recovery
  • Liaising with pre-qualified auctioneers during realization of securities
  • Participate in negotiations of legal documentation with third parties with the intent to lead in a few months
  • Start assuming basic corporate Secretarial Services such as corporate governance advisory, maintaining the companies register of members, filing annual returns and progressive application of Companies Act
  • Consistently meet goals for initial meeting set up
  • Train internal team member on all tasks related to a legal clerk
  • Continue to build on your core skills and product/industry knowledge
  • Know what it takes to meet or exceed your goals and maintain the momentum to do so
  • Begin to expand your knowledge of all duties and responsibilities
  • Work with mentors to set goals for yourself to gain consideration to promotion


  • KES 45,000 to 80,000 monthly gross stipend commensurate with experience
  • Standard benefits as defined in Employment Act

  • Solid experience in commercial law and contract law especially related to smaller enterprises from non-registered sole proprietorships to LLCs

Second Round: Virtual Assignment and In-Person Case Assignment with Presentation

  • Umati Capital will select the top tier candidates to complete two assignments: a virtual assignment that can be completed anywhere with internet access and then an in-person case assignment at Umati Capital’s offices in Westlands.

Third Round: In-Person Interview

  • Finalists are selected for an in-person interview at Umati Capital’s offices in Westlands.
